A Oracle Case Study
Agder Energi AS, Norway’s third-largest power company, faced exponential data growth and a national smart‑metering mandate that required two‑way communication and new customer services by 2019. The utility needed to upgrade its hardware to handle massive metering data, ensure high availability and disaster recovery, avoid downtime that would affect generation, distribution and trading, and do all this without increasing complexity or platform costs.
Agder Energi replaced its VM cluster with Oracle Engineered Systems—two Exadata Database Machines with RAC and Oracle Database Appliances—to run ~30 databases across test, development and production. The move delivered about 3x lower total cost of ownership, up to 10x faster complex queries for 800 users, simplified operations with capacity‑on‑demand licensing, and robust DR/high‑availability, enabling rapid rollout of services like time‑based pricing, alerts and web self‑service.
