National Oilwell Varco, a major manufacturing company serving the drilling and production industry, needed better visibility across its Wellbore Technologies business after multiple acquisitions left it with many disparate systems. The company wanted faster access to trusted operational and financial data, a single source of information, and less IT complexity, and turned to Oracle Exadata along with Oracle Business Intelligence Suite and Oracle Database 12c.

Oracle Exadata helped National Oilwell Varco build a high-performance data warehouse that consolidated Oracle and non-Oracle data and improved reporting and analysis across six lines of business. The results were significant: query times dropped from more than 20 minutes to under a second, nightly ETL processing of about 12 million records fell from 16 hours to 3 hours, and IT administration was streamlined enough to reduce DBA support from three people to one.
