A Oracle Exadata Case Study
The Municipality of Groningen needed to replace outdated, incompatible hardware and improve the performance of critical municipal systems, including tax management and topographical mapping, while also reducing database administration work for its resource-stretched IT team. Working with Oracle Exadata, the city sought a scalable, single-vendor platform to support more than 800 applications and keep data current for citizens, staff, and neighboring municipalities.
Oracle Exadata implemented Oracle Engineered Systems, including Oracle Exadata Database Machine X5-2 and Oracle Database Appliance X5-2, to consolidate databases and speed up processing. Oracle Exadata cut tax application response times from nearly 50 seconds to under 2 seconds, reduced annual tax calculation time from more than 2 days to under 2 hours, and lowered topographical map update times from 4 hours to 90 seconds. It also saved more than 300 hours per year in patch processing and supported 14 terabytes of data for over 5,000 users without additional hardware investment.
