A Oracle Aconex Case Study
Xstrata’s Antapaccay expansion is a US$1.5 billion brownfield project to expand the Tintaya copper mine in southern Peru, boosting annual copper-in-concentrate production by 60% (to about 160,000 tonnes) and extending mine life to at least 20 years. The build involved over 3,000 people and required delivery of two gigabytes of project data across Australia, the U.S., Argentina, Peru and Chile, while controlling software/hardware costs and avoiding delays and rework from poor document version control.
Xstrata deployed Oracle Aconex, which was installed and the team trained within two weeks; the platform proved easy to learn (important for the 30% local trades workforce), ensured critical documents were transmitted and reviewed on time, and enforced version control so everyone worked from the latest documents. The result was faster onboarding, timely reviews across dispersed teams, reduced risk of rework, and significant savings on software and hardware.
