CSX Transportation, a large freight railroad, needed to determine the optimal size and mix of its locomotive fleet and the ideal locations for maintenance shops to improve on-time train performance. They hired Optym to develop a simulation system to model the randomness and movement of thousands of locomotives across their network.
Optym developed a discrete event simulation system that modeled train delays and maintenance operations. This decision support system allowed CSX to run multiple scenarios and analyze the results.
