CSX Transportation, a large freight railroad, needed to determine the optimal size and mix of its locomotive fleet and the ideal locations for maintenance shops to improve on-time train performance. They hired Optym to develop a simulation system to model the randomness and movement of thousands of locomotives across their network.

Optym developed a discrete event simulation system that modeled train delays and maintenance operations. This decision support system allowed CSX to run multiple scenarios and analyze the results. The new system provided management with objective and verifiable insights into locomotive productivity and efficiency, enabling them to assess the impact of fleet size on performance and estimate future locomotive requirements.
