CSX Transportation cuts hump yard costs per car by 6% with Optym

CSX Transportation faced significant congestion and capacity bottlenecks in its hump yards as rail network volumes grew. To address this, the railroad partnered with vendor Optym to develop an integrated hump yard simulation system to scientifically determine true capacity and identify improvement opportunities.

Optym developed YardSym®, a web-based decision support system that accurately modeled yard operations. The solution helped CSX reduce the cost per car processed by up to 6% and yielded millions of dollars in savings by avoiding unnecessary capital investments. For this project, the CSX team received the Chairman’s Award for Excellence in 2012.
