CSX Transportation boosts intermodal yard capacity by 15% with Optym

CSX Transportation sought to evaluate the proposed layout for a major new intermodal yard near Chicago, a roughly $200 million investment needed to handle over 30 trains and 2,500 cars daily. The customer hired vendor Optym to use a discrete-event simulation system to analyze the design, determine if it could meet projected capacity, and identify potential improvements.

Optym built a detailed simulation model to replicate yard operations, validate performance, and iteratively remove bottlenecks. The vendor's redesigned layout increased the yard's processing capacity by over 15% without a significant capital increase, creating tens of millions in added value. This successful project, which used Optym's simulation solution, was built and later received the 2011 Arema Engineering Award.
