BNSF Railway saves millions in operating costs with Optym

BNSF Railway, the second-largest freight railroad in North America, faced the complex challenge of designing an optimal train schedule while honoring various yard and track capacity constraints. Optym partnered with them to develop a solution for this planning challenge.

Using a divide-and-conquer approach and state-of-the-art optimization techniques, Optym created the TrainMax schedule optimizer. Since its deployment, the solution has saved BNSF millions of dollars in operating expenses and is used frequently to identify improvements and perform what-if studies. TrainMax is now an integral component of BNSF’s service design suite.
