Truman Medical Centers - Customer Case Study

Truman Medical Centers (TMC), a two-hospital, 547-bed health system serving Kansas City, faced mounting coding and revenue-cycle challenges as it prepared for ICD-10: persistent coding backlogs, difficulty hiring and retaining experienced coders, and the need for computer-assisted coding (CAC) that would integrate with its EMR and billing systems. To address these issues, TMC selected Optum360 to provide a combined outsourcing and technology approach, including Optum Coding Service and Optum Enterprise Computer-Assisted Coding.

Optum360 implemented a bundled solution—outsourced coding (with most TMC coders hired by Optum360), Optum Enterprise CAC, ICD-10 physician training, Optum CDI 3D and ongoing support—and moved much coding to global operations while integrating CAC with TMC’s EHR. The partnership delivered measurable gains: roughly $7 million in cost savings over the agreement, accounts coded within four days rose from 69% to 84%, Medicare turnaround improved 30% (Medicaid 20%), average monthly cash inflow increased by about $3 million, CMI-driven reimbursement rose $700,000, and days cash outstanding fell (Hospital Hill 5.1→2.4 days; Lakewood 5.2→1.3 days).
