Schneider National’s Tobacco Strategy Moves Smokers to Quit

Schneider National, a large transportation and logistics company, faced the challenge of reducing employee tobacco use to improve health outcomes and lower costs. To address this, Schneider partnered with Optum360 and used the Optum360 QuitPower tobacco cessation program alongside a 20% smoker premium surcharge (waived for those who completed the program) as part of a strong employer communication and incentive strategy.

Optum360 implemented QuitPower’s high-intensity coaching, nicotine replacement therapy, multi‑method risk identification, and a surcharge-waiver enrollment requirement. The combined approach drove QuitPower enrollment up eightfold, produced about seven times more successful quit outcomes than Optum360’s standard book-of-business expectations, reduced reported tobacco prevalence from 9.6% (2010) to 8.7% (2011), and generated an estimated $267,678 in annual health‑care and productivity savings.
