Delta, a global airline with about 76,000 employees and 170,000 members, needed a flexible, scalable health‑and‑wellness approach that fit a 24/7, highly mobile workforce and would encourage better health decisions while containing costs. To evolve its mature benefits strategy, Delta engaged Optum360 and its Personal Health Support–Total Population (PHS‑TP) program to create a member‑centric solution and the Delta Health Direct brand.
Optum360 implemented PHS‑TP with a multi‑modal activation strategy (24/7 telephonic access, mobile, online), targeted value‑based outreach, personalized nurse/coach interventions, and onsite wellness champions. The initiative produced clear results: 44% more calls into Delta Health Direct, 61% higher engagement in population health programs, a 36.2% improvement in medical expense savings/avoided costs (2011–2013), a 53% increase in high‑risk engagements, and better decision‑making among engaged chronic members (72% vs. 66%).
