Halifax Health Uncovers Drives Down Uncompensated Care and Bad Debt

Halifax Health, a central Florida health system with 678 beds, 500+ physicians and more than 117,000 ER visits per year, faced rising uncompensated care and bad debt—about $54 million annually—and needed to help self-pay patients find appropriate funding. To address this, Halifax Health partnered with Optum, deploying Optum’s Financial Clearance Services (including Eligibility and Enrollment and Third-Party Coverage) to streamline patient funding and reduce write-offs.

Optum placed on-site, trained teams and automation tools (including the Clearance Patient Access Suite) to verify eligibility, enroll patients in Medicaid, SSI and SSDI, and manage complex MVA and workers’ compensation claims while educating patients on benefits. As a result, Optum helped Halifax Health convert $69.8 million of self-pay to Medicaid and other funding sources in 2017, improving reimbursement, patient financial navigation, and long-term revenue performance.
