Colonial Healthcare Implements Clinical Research as a Care Option with Clinical Trials Access Network

Colonial Healthcare is a 30+ provider community primary care medical group in the South Carolina midlands that wanted to expand access to advanced treatment options and integrate clinical research into care but had little prior experience running trials or identifying eligible patients. To address this, Colonial partnered with Optum using the Clinical Trials Access Network to streamline digital pre-screening and referral workflows.

Optum’s Clinical Trials Access Network digitally matched and prescreened more than 200 patients to a colon cancer screening study, enabling provider outreach and referral coordination; 72% of patients contacted agreed to trial screening, 42% of participants were African American (reflecting the local population), and the first patient referral was achieved in about 20 business days. The program generated additional revenue for providers, improved patient satisfaction, and demonstrated that Optum’s solution can efficiently expand clinical trial access and diversity in community settings.
