California University Assesses and Improves Network Security Posture

University of California, a private liberal arts and sciences institution in California serving 4,500 students across seven regional campuses, needed to better protect student information and critical infrastructure. To validate its security posture, the university engaged Optiv to assess its IT assets and environments, compare current protections against industry best practices, and identify vulnerabilities that could expose sensitive systems and data.

Optiv performed a network security assessment that included asset cataloging, vulnerability assessments, penetration testing, and reviews of wireless and network architecture configurations. The assessment found the university had a low level of exposure with no critical issues, while also uncovering low- and medium-severity vendor-related vulnerabilities and opportunities for remediation. As a result, University of California received comparative posture analysis, key findings, and short- and long-term remediation goals to further reduce risk and strengthen security, with Optiv recommending maintenance releases and updates where possible.
