Case Study: Southern Star achieves a 100% increase in maintenance capacity with OptimoRoute

A OptimoRoute Case Study

Preview of the Southern Star Case Study

Southern Star’s 3-Month Nationwide OptimoRoute Rollout Increases Capacity By 100%

Southern Star, one of America’s major natural gas transporters, operates a roughly 5,800-mile transmission pipeline across seven states with 250 technicians performing up to 2,500 preventative maintenance activities weekly. Confronted with an inefficient legacy scheduling process, hundreds of thousands of GPS-based locations instead of addresses, and many planning constraints (time windows, skills, multiple orders per site), Southern Star partnered with OptimoRoute for route optimization software and mapping integration to support a fast, company-wide rollout.

OptimoRoute implemented a three-month nationwide deployment, integrated with Southern Star’s EAM, and delivered flexible mapping that recognizes GPS coordinates and enforces complex constraints. The result: planners now manage up to 2,500 orders per week with a smaller planning team (down from as many as 19 to about eight), technicians’ daily tasks rose from roughly 3 to 5–6 activities, and Southern Star can fit about 100% more tasks into its schedules—driving clear capacity and efficiency gains.
