The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) faced a challenge with its manual, paper-based student attendance system, which was time-consuming and created a reluctance to monitor large lecture groups. To address this, UCLan worked with vendor Opticon to implement an automated solution using the OPN2001 pocket memory scanner.

Opticon's solution allowed lecturers to scan student ID barcodes during events, with the data later downloaded directly into the university's attendance database. This eliminated all paperwork and enabled UCLan to quickly identify and address poor attendance, improving student welfare. A further benefit was the ability to analyze room usage to optimize lecture hall capacity planning.
