The cybersecurity company Fortinet partnered with the sustainability management platform Optera to tackle the challenge of calculating the use-phase emissions for its vast portfolio of over 9,500 products. This scope 3 emissions category was their most significant, and Fortinet needed a scalable, accurate methodology that complied with new regulations and accounted for the unique energy consumption of each product across more than 100 countries.

Optera implemented a solution by developing a product-level model that used Fortinet's detailed power consumption data. This model applied country-specific grid emission factors and incorporated forward-looking scenarios. The result was a highly accurate, future-ready emissions inventory that not only improved reporting but also provided insights to guide Fortinet's R&D, product design, and progress toward its science-based net-zero targets.
