BSR builds first GHG inventory with Optera across 11 global offices

BSR, a global non-profit sustainability organization, needed to establish its first accurate greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 to set a science-based net-zero target. The challenge involved calculating emissions from a complex network of global contractors and offices, standardizing disparate data, and filling gaps where primary data was unavailable. To address this, BSR partnered with vendor Optera and utilized its Operator software platform and expert services.

Optera implemented the solution by helping BSR collect and model data, particularly for Scope 3 emissions from contractors and for various global office spaces. The Optera team standardized the data and performed spend-based calculations, storing everything in a centralized platform. As a result, BSR established a foundational inventory that enabled them to set ambitious SBTi-aligned targets, including a 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. The project also successfully recorded data from 11 global offices and hubs.
