Multnomah County Elections boosts ballot processing to 375 per hour with OPEX

Multnomah County Elections faced a challenge processing a record number of mail-in ballots during the 2020 election. Due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, they could not safely accommodate their usual large staff, creating a major bottleneck in their operations despite anticipating high voter turnout.

The county implemented the OPEX Model 72 Ballot Opener and Extractor from vendor OPEX Corporation. This automation solution increased processing speed from 200 to an average of 375 ballots per staff member per hour and enhanced ballot secrecy. As a result, OPEX helped Multnomah County successfully process 465,000 ballots while reducing required staff by 50%, well below the mandated safety cap.
