BORICA AD cutovers Bulgaria’s euro payments with OpenWay in 3 hours and 48 hours of zero downtime

BORICA AD, Bulgaria's national card and payment infrastructure operator, faced the challenge of executing a high-risk, national-scale transition to the euro currency. This required a coordinated infrastructure transformation across the entire payments ecosystem. The project was supported by technology partner OpenWay and its Way4 payment processing platform.

OpenWay's solution enabled a controlled cutover of the national card infrastructure, which was updated simultaneously to support the euro. This resulted in zero unplanned downtime, with the first successful euro ATM withdrawal occurring just 20 seconds after midnight. Within the first 48 hours, BORICA's infrastructure seamlessly processed over 930,000 card and ATM transactions worth nearly €42 million, demonstrating the success of the migration orchestrated by OpenWay.
