Case Study: Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology (IEE) achieves near‑zero downtime V2V server and GroupWise migration with OpenText PlateSpin Migration Factory

A OpenText Case Study

Preview of the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology IEE Case Study

When a Fraunhofer institute split in two, it used PlateSpin Migration Factory to move servers without service disruption.

Fraunhofer IWES and its sister organization Fraunhofer IEE—two German research institutes focused on wind and energy systems—were split into independent entities, creating an IT challenge: migrate mission-critical GroupWise email and Linux file servers for 550 users across 13 locations on a tight schedule without disrupting researchers’ work. Ensuring continuous communication and data integrity during the reorganization was a top priority.

IT partner Login-IT used Micro Focus PlateSpin Migration Factory to automate and test the Virtual-to-Virtual migrations (Xen to VMware), including incremental replication and Server Sync. The team moved up to 1.5 TB per server and completed a 3 TB GroupWise production cutover in 15 minutes with no service interruption or lost emails, enabling Fraunhofer IEE to go live as an independent institute with minimal risk and downtime.
