Case Study: FIS achieves 20% performance boost and cloud-native scalability with OpenText (Micro Focus Visual COBOL)

Preview of the FIS Case Study

Visual COBOL-driven cloud native solution goes beyond the bounds of mainframe architecture to demonstrate cutting edge modernization

FIS, a global leader in technology for merchants, banks and capital markets, faced the challenge of modernizing InvestOne — its COBOL-based fund management platform that runs over 60% of the market’s mutual funds and derivatives (about $40 trillion AUM). Built on a 1980s mainframe, InvestOne needed faster, more efficient development and delivery, greater operational resilience and cloud-native scalability, all without disrupting existing client processes.

FIS replatformed InvestOne to Linux using Micro Focus Visual COBOL to compile COBOL to Java bytecode, introduced a Java Engine Tier (replacing mainframe CICS), and containerized the stack with Docker to integrate into a DevOps CI/CD pipeline. The move delivered a low‑risk transition with full reuse of business logic, enabled horizontal scaling by spinning containers, improved concurrent processing and accelerated time-to-market — producing over a 20% performance boost and monthly client releases.
