Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the largest hospital in Missouri and an affiliated teaching hospital of Washington University School of Medicine, needed to enable data-driven decision making across clinical and operational teams. The Data Management team faced siloed source systems, constantly changing business rules and vocabulary, extremely wide tables (over 570 columns), billions of rows, complex multi-table joins, and high CPU and memory usage that limited timely analytics.
To address this, the team built an adaptive data warehouse underpinned by the Vertica Analytics Platform with Tableau as the presentation layer, consolidating financial, HR, EHR, operational and departmental data into a common, linkable vocabulary. Comprehensive governance, a data dictionary, quality tools and standardized reports produced interactive, drill-down dashboards that deliver real-time answers, improve performance, cost and agility, and support secure, data-driven decision making across the organization.
