Utilia S.p.A., an Italian software and IT services company in the utilities sector, manages GiadaEVO—a core billing and metering solution used for over 500,000 end customers. Facing tighter regulation, rising market complexity and a 20+ year COBOL codebase (GiadaAGE), Utilia needed faster time-to-market, better Java/HTML integration and a more flexible architecture while preserving existing business logic and skills.

Utilia adopted Micro Focus Visual COBOL to recompile COBOL to Java bytecode and modernize development with an Eclipse toolset, enabling seamless COBOL–Java interoperability and web services integration. The move delivered a cloud- and mobile-ready web UI, automated cross-system workflows, effective load balancing and faster development cycles—achieving improved time-to-market, stronger system integration and greater development efficiency (business agility three times faster than anticipated).
