Using Open Text Collaboration, Vignette Edition, the Brain Institute spans organizational and disciplinary boundaries to collaborate, innovative, and educate

The Brain Institute at the University of Utah coordinates neuroscience research and education across 140 faculty from 35 departments and multiple campuses, with a mission to accelerate multidisciplinary discovery and translate findings into treatments. Its core challenge was enabling secure, effective collaboration across departmental and geographic boundaries—especially for complex, multi‑investigator grant writing—while protecting intellectual property and eliminating versioning confusion from email-based workflows.

The institute implemented Open Text Collaboration (Vignette Edition), branded as “Unite,” to provide private and public workspaces, templates, document versioning and approval workflows, wikis, blogs, and powerful full‑text search behind university firewalls. Unite centralized grant development and project administration, removed large attachments from email, sped proposal turnaround, improved proposal quality, and has been widely adopted across campus—earning strong positive feedback from users and administrators.
