University of Washington empowers 18,000 users with unified communications

The University of Washington, a top-ranked public research university serving 54,000 students and 18,000 faculty and staff across 200+ buildings and remote sites (including Harborview Medical Center), needed to replace its end-of-life Octel 350 voicemail system. The replacement had to integrate with Avaya IP/digital telephony, support a mixed email environment (Google, Exchange, Office 365), scale to handle up to 300,000 calls per month, minimize disruption during cutover, and deliver advanced mobile unified-communications features.

After evaluating competitors, UW selected OpenText CX-E Voice and deployed it in phased rollouts using Octel TUI emulation for a seamless transition. With Neverfail high-availability architecture, dual call servers and hot-standby, plus Enterprise XpressCare support, CX-E now provides secure, reliable voicemail and unified messaging to 18,000 users worldwide, supports high call volumes, and improves mobility and administration across the university.
