A OpenText Case Study
The South African Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) sought to virtualize its production servers to cut power and cooling costs, free scarce data center floor space, and improve resilience. With many physical servers averaging only 5–10% utilization but showing differing peak times, the DTI needed a way to identify which production servers could safely be consolidated together and to size new host hardware correctly.
Using PlateSpin Recon, the DTI monitored 23 target servers for just over a month and received detailed reports and consolidation scenarios that revealed workload peaks, troughs and compatibility. The analysis identified 11 servers suitable for consolidation onto a two-node virtual host cluster, enabling an expected 75% reduction in power and cooling, lower hardware acquisition costs, and improved availability by removing single points of failure.
