Seadrill Uses Opentext ECM Suite To Collaborate Globally And Increase Productivity

Seadrill, a global offshore drilling contractor with about 7,600 employees, 40 drilling units and operations in 15 countries, faced growing document-management problems as it received large volumes of drawings, equipment specs and manuals for new rigs. Its partially implemented document-management tools couldn’t support geographically dispersed teams, track revisions reliably, or enforce a uniform way of working across business units and offshore sites, so the company needed a corporate ECM solution for global content sharing and collaboration.

Seadrill selected the Open Text ECM Suite (eDOCS Edition) and partnered with Contesto to design, implement and train users in 2008–2009, including an internal eDOCS e-learning module. The rollout put eDOCS DM in use by more than 1,500 onshore and offshore staff, introduced a common metadata and numbering structure, enabled two-way replication between sites, eliminated email-based sharing, and delivered better revision control, traceability and cross‑site collaboration—improving productivity and standardizing content processes.
