Parklane Systems develops occupational health and safety and workplace risk management software used by government, healthcare, education and manufacturing customers. Faced with the need to keep sensitive employee and medical data tightly secured while also enabling broader organizational reporting (via tools like SAP Crystal and Cognos), Parklane wanted relational access to its RM/COBOL-based application but rejected a risky, multi-year rewrite that would disrupt customers.
Parklane implemented Micro Focus Relativity to present COBOL data files as a relational ODBC source, letting administrators control access boundaries and enabling contemporary reporting, BI and data-warehousing integration without re-engineering the application. The change delivered massive productivity gains versus a rewrite, allowed customers to self-serve custom reports, produced rapid ROI for some clients (as little as two months), and required minimal ongoing support while preserving a stable, future-proof platform.
