Optimal Plus, an IIoT analytics provider for semiconductor and electronics manufacturers, processes data from tens of billions of ICs and boards each year to improve quality, yield, and uptime. Faced with a largest customer approaching 60 TB of compressed (300–400 TB uncompressed) data, their legacy SQL Server hit scalability and retention limits—forcing hard choices about what historical data to keep—and they needed better performance for predictive algorithms.

Optimal Plus selected Vertica’s column-store analytics for its high compression, speed, and horizontal scalability; tests showed dramatic improvements (for example, calculating 17 statistical functions on 2 billion points in under a minute). Deploying Vertica (with Hadoop as cold storage) removed prior data and query limits, reduced hardware and licensing costs, and enabled near-real-time comparisons of historical and streaming data to predict equipment faults and prevent downtime.
