The Office of Physical Plant at Pennsylvania State University, which supports campus teaching, research, and service and manages GroupWise for about 1,400 users across two post offices, faced lengthy, labor-intensive backups that often took more than 24 hours and risked slow recovery in disaster scenarios. The IT team needed a faster, more reliable way to perform hot backups and enable quick, push-button restores without excessive disk or processing overhead.
They implemented Micro Focus GroupWise Disaster Recovery, a GroupWise‑specific solution that uses a collector/RSYNC architecture, single-instance storage and Smart Purge to keep backups current and compact. As a result, post office backups now take under two hours (scheduled up to four times daily), backup times fell by 80–90%, a lost personal address book was restored in minutes, and IT staff regained time previously spent on lengthy recovery tasks.
