A OpenText Case Study
North Star BlueScope Steel, a U.S. subsidiary of BlueScope that makes hot-rolled steel bands and recycles about 1.5 million tons of scrap annually, was hampered by a manual, Excel‑based costing process. Large, slow spreadsheets prevented month‑over‑month comparisons and required staff to manually consolidate data from disparate sources—making costing analysis slow, error‑prone and resource intensive.
The company added OpenText Big Data Analytics to its existing OpenText Information Hub (iHub) and Maximo environment to automate data collection (from Access, electric arc furnaces and other systems), blend sources and deliver dashboards and month‑to‑month drilldowns. The change delivered faster, more granular costing insights (down to cost‑per‑minute), uncovered higher‑margin grades and upsell opportunities, reduced manual effort, improved decision speed and laid the groundwork for expanded forecasting and IoT‑driven analytics.
