Nonprofit Cures Paper Overload With Online Processing

1199 National Benefit and Pension Funds (NBPF) is a self‑administered, nonprofit Taft‑Hartley Welfare Trust serving more than 150,000 members across the New York area. Rapid growth and mergers created a surge in paperwork that the existing staff could not manage—applications and correspondence were frequently lost or misfiled, processing times lengthened, and managers lacked data to track workloads or staff productivity.

NBPF partnered with ImageWork to deploy OpenText MBPM, replacing paper folders with electronic folders and digital images and automating the processing of more than 5,000 monthly applications. The system gives hundreds of users immediate online access to member records, enables searchable notes and routing, and provides quantitative tracking of transactions and response times—resulting in faster service, measurable productivity data, reduced storage costs, reclaimed office space, and higher member satisfaction.
