MOHELA uses OpenText Automated Output Accessibility Solution to Produce High-Volume Accessible PDF Documents for Online Presentment

Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA), a student loan servicer, faced a fast-moving federal mandate to make all electronic documents Section 508–compliant. The organization needed to convert roughly one million AFP print stream documents into accessible PDFs each month, with two documents (billing and disclosure statements) accounting for about 60% (~600,000) of monthly volume—and had less than six weeks to deliver initial results after its original vendor could not.

MOHELA selected and implemented the OpenText Automated Output Accessibility solution, which converted mainframe AFP streams into accessible PDFs using document-specific templates; OpenText developed the two largest templates, installed the system, and trained MOHELA staff to build additional templates. The project met its deadlines (initial deliverables by July and full conversion by November), achieved 508 compliance, improved access for visually impaired borrowers, reduced requests for alternate formats, and left MOHELA able to maintain and expand the solution.
