Cattolica Assicurazioni is one of Italy’s largest insurers (about €7 billion in premiums and 3.6 million clients in 2019) whose core policy system, LIFE, dated from the 1970s. Growing mainframe MIPS costs, worsening batch performance (processes taking 12+ hours), lack of internet readiness, and slow product launches (up to six months) made it imperative to modernize and reduce operational expense.
Cattolica re-hosted LIFE using Micro Focus Enterprise Developer and Enterprise Server on an Intel Linux distributed platform, preserving VSAM data and emulating CICS/JES2 to minimize risk. The unified solution delivered real-time transaction visibility, cut batch times to under 20 minutes, reduced time-to-market to two months, achieved 75% operational cost savings, and realized full ROI within a year.
