FIATC, Spain’s second-largest mutual insurer with over 50 branches, faced a complex, expensive mainframe environment built over 30 years with 30+ million lines of code in multiple languages (COBOL, RPG, Easytrieve, VisualAge). The heterogeneous databases and legacy tooling made data analysis, BI, development skills recruitment and modern mobile/online features difficult, so the company needed a low-risk way to simplify infrastructure, cut costs and speed delivery without rewriting or replacing core applications.
Working with Micro Focus and HPE Pointnext, FIATC completed a 16-month transparent migration from IBM mainframe to an Intel-based Windows distributed platform using Micro Focus Enterprise Developer, Enterprise Server and Reflection, and consolidated databases into a single SQL Server. The move delivered a 70% reduction in OPEX with ROI in under two years, 30% faster batch processing (saving about two nightly hours), a unified Eclipse-based development environment (COBOL and Java), improved collaboration and BI-ready data for faster, simpler delivery of modern features.
