Preview of the Kmart Australia Case Study

Micro Focus Enterprise and AWS-driven modernization is the transformation launchpad for new growth, innovation, and savings

Kmart Australia, a major retailer with more than 300 stores and 37,000 team members, relied on a 25‑year mainframe running some 30 mission‑critical applications. Rapid growth, a cloud‑first strategy and a shrinking pool of mainframe skills made it hard to respond to changing business needs; an attempted rewrite failed amid six million lines of code, undocumented business rules and over 100 nightly batch jobs, so Kmart needed a way to modernize while safeguarding business continuity.

Kmart partnered with Micro Focus, AWS and Infosys to replatform its mainframe using Micro Focus Enterprise Developer, Enterprise Server, Enterprise Analyzer and Enterprise Test Server, virtualizing the environment on AWS in a phased, remote migration. The move delivered scalability, improved fault tolerance and faster development, unlocked consolidated data for analytics and machine learning (better stock allocation and seasonal forecasting), enabled new business models and produced more than $4 million in annual operational cost savings.
