A OpenText Case Study
Metropolitan Utilities District, a customer‑owned gas and water utility serving more than 200,000 customers in the Omaha area, faced the daunting task of digitizing roughly three million legacy paper documents accumulated over a century. The paper archive was vulnerable to loss from fire or disaster and made field operations slow and inefficient—technicians had to call dispatch to locate engineering drawings—so the utility needed a way to scan, preserve and integrate content with its SAP and GIS systems for faster, mobile access.
The district implemented OpenText Extended ECM for SAP Solutions, scanning hundreds of thousands of engineering drawings and service cards and linking content to Esri GIS and SAP so field crews can access documents from tablets with one click. The change reduced manual lookups, preserved irreplaceable records, freed physical storage space and delivered estimated annual savings of about $300,000 in time and space, while laying the groundwork to eliminate paper workflows across the organization.
