Lowell Area Schools, a growing K–12 district in Michigan with eight campuses, needed a reliable, enterprise-class IT platform that fit a tight budget and small IT staff. Facing a major network upgrade, the district sought a solution that required minimal hands-on maintenance while making prudent use of taxpayer funds.
LAS adopted Micro Focus Open Enterprise Server on SUSE Linux and ZENworks for centralized management, running core services, virtualized Windows apps, and open-source tools on a six-node cluster. The migration consolidated 20 servers to six (saving about $50,000), cut software costs, improved uptime and security, and let IT proactively manage 2,000 endpoints—freeing staff to focus on higher-value projects and classroom technology.
