The Patent Office, a government agency handling up to 65,000 patent, trademark, and design applications monthly, faced an aging IT estate of roughly 2,000 systems and a highly manual intake process (emails and PDFs scraped by hand). When a change in legal requirements meant existing holders would need to reapply, the office anticipated a roughly 300% surge in applications and needed to modernize and scale quickly to avoid delays and errors.
Working with Digital Assured, the team deployed Micro Focus LoadRunner Professional to model peak loads and harden or replace systems, and Micro Focus Robotic Process Automation to scrape, validate, enter and notify on application data automatically. The combined approach prepared the infrastructure for the spike, supported a fourfold increase in users during the transition, sped up applicant feedback and streamlined end-to-end processing in line with the Patent Office’s “Digital First” agenda.
