Kainos plc, a Belfast-based software company that builds healthcare IT solutions (including the Evolve electronic medical record), faced a challenge turning large volumes of legacy paper records into clinically useful, searchable information. They needed OCR and indexing to extract document types, map people to clinical disciplines, visualize clustered search results, and connect to other systems without ingesting duplicate copies—previously scanned patient files often became single, unstructured PDFs that were hard for clinicians to navigate.

Kainos partnered with OpenText, deploying TeleForm and LiquidOffice to digitize, index and manage-in-place the paper record. The solution itemizes documents within large scanned sets, enables cross-system search and visualization, and captures electronic form data—delivering faster access to relevant patient information, cost savings from a comprehensive capture/access approach, improved clinical decision-making and new opportunities for research.
