IUT de Valence saves time and money with Micro Focus VM Explorer. The institute automates the backup and replication processes of more than 30 machines

IUT de Valence, part of Université Grenoble Alpes in France, supports 1,300 students with a compact IT team managing a complex environment of hundreds of endpoints and multiple servers. After virtualizing services with VMware ESXi to improve efficiency and reliability, the institute struggled with time-consuming, error-prone homemade processes for moving, replicating, and backing up virtual machines and needed a cost‑effective, reliable backup solution.

The IT team implemented OpenText VM Explorer, quickly testing the free version and using its Scheduler to automate backups and replications across six physical servers and 30 VMs (weekly backups of ~500 GB for half the VMs and daily replication of ~10 VMs). The result: faster recovery (from a full day to a couple of hours), freed staff time for higher‑value tasks, and a budget‑friendly system that has effectively paid for itself.
