Introduced a cost-effective, modern interface on a choice of devices with Verastream

Northumbria Police, serving 1.5 million people across more than 2,000 square miles in the UK, needed to modernize a 27-year-old COBOL/TANDEM back-end (NPICCS) with a user-friendly, mobile-capable interface to reduce paperwork, cut training time, and give officers more time on the street while maintaining critical services and data security.

They adopted Micro Focus Verastream to expose existing back-end logic without major rewrites, delivering Electronic Custody Records and a Police Box mobile app that consolidate multiple systems into a single interface on tablets and phones. The solution enabled real-time updates across custody suites and 3,000 officers, eliminated about 95% of custody paperwork, improved public service, reduced training overheads, and increased officers’ effective street time.
