Investors Heritage Life Insurance Company (IHLIC), a U.S. insurer serving preneed, final expense and credit-related markets, faced rising costs and maintenance challenges running a 20+ year IBM mainframe with a Computer Associates Datacom database and some 3,000 COBOL programs. Rewriting applications wasn’t feasible and finding compatible software was difficult, so IHLIC validated a migration strategy with a proof-of-concept using its statutory reserves calculation to ensure parity with the mainframe.
IHLIC moved its 600,000+ lines of code to a Windows Server/SQL Server environment on VMware using Micro Focus Enterprise Server and Enterprise Developer, keeping core COBOL logic intact. The in-house conversion delivered a full ROI within 18 months, about a 25% overall performance improvement, dramatically faster batch processing, disaster recovery reduced from up to 48 hours to under an hour, lower hardware and maintenance costs, and easier onboarding and future development with .NET/Java options.
