Government agency uses Micro Focus Data Protector to standardize and streamline its backup, recovery, and off-site replication processes.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is a large state agency responsible for thousands of lane‑miles, nearly 3,000 vehicular bridges and a distributed workforce across seven administrative regions. Managing roughly 180 TB of critical data with a 260‑person IT organization, WSDOT faced inconsistent, obsolete regional backup systems and overdue hardware lifecycles that made it difficult to standardize backup, recovery and off‑site replication processes.

After evaluating vendors, WSDOT deployed Micro Focus Data Protector with HPE StoreOnce appliances (completed in July 2016 after a six‑week migration). The centralized solution standardized backups across all regions, sped up full and incremental jobs, reduced manual tasks through automated reporting and weekly checks, enabled off‑site replication, and lowered total cost of ownership via capacity pricing—improving performance, resilience and the agency’s ability to recover critical data.
