A OpenText Case Study
Geisinger Health System, a physician-led network serving 2.6 million people across 43 counties in Pennsylvania, faced a massive information challenge: convert millions of pages of paper and numerous electronic systems into a single, secure electronic health record environment that met HIPAA and federal EHR goals while giving clinicians instant access to complete patient histories and clinical assets across facilities.
Working with OpenText, Geisinger deployed Integrated Document Management plus collaboration and social tools (Vignette, Tempo) and a “Total Asset Capture” approach, integrating content with EpicCare and PACS. The program migrated legacy content (65 million pages) and now manages ~800 million assets/1 billion records with ~120,000 daily retrievals, yielding faster clinical access, audit-ready compliance, reclaimed physical space, an estimated payback in 17 months with nearly $1.5M in avoided costs and additional savings (about $60K/year in board document shipping), plus new collaboration and patient social communities.
