A OpenText Case Study
David Kopf Instruments, a long-established U.S. manufacturer of stereotaxic instruments for neurophysiological research, relied on a bespoke manufacturing and accounting system that had evolved over 40+ years and grown to 750,000 lines of COBOL. With the main developer planning retirement, the company faced a critical knowledge-transfer challenge: no documentation, complex interdependencies, and the need for safe, ongoing updates to meet changing tax and business requirements.
David Kopf joined the Micro Focus COBOL Analyzer beta and quickly installed the tool to visualize program structure, dependencies and data flows, enabling pre-change impact analysis. The new developer could map the system and make schema changes within hours rather than months, delivering faster onboarding, reduced risk, and significant time and cost savings with no disruption to the business.
