Carilion Health System, a major healthcare provider in Central and Southwest Virginia with over 9,600 employees, runs a large Micro Focus GroupWise email environment supporting about 5,400 users and processing up to 36,000 messages daily. Facing slow, fragmented GroupWise domains and a rising tide of targeted attacks and malware, Carilion needed an email security solution that preserved its GroupWise investment while protecting clinicians and staff from harmful content.

Carilion deployed Micro Focus Secure Messaging Gateway (formerly GWAVA) to decrypt and scan internal and external GroupWise mail and to apply attachment blocking, content filtering, and anti-spam controls. The gateway now blocks thousands of unwanted messages daily (over 14,000 in one weekend), speeds up the email system, removes spam and virus threats for end users, and gives administrators far greater control over their messaging environment.
