Preview of the Segl Bauzentrum Case Study

Building supplies company creates a reliable IT environment with virtual desktops.

Segl Bauzentrum is a medium‑sized, family‑owned German building supplies chain (headquartered in Eging am See) that was growing rapidly—seven branches, €50M sales and 300 employees—but its 160 back‑office workstations ran on an outdated client‑server setup. When franchiser Hagebau introduced a modern merchandise management system that the old clients could not support and maintenance overheads became excessive, Segl engaged local IT partner Datapex to redesign the desktop infrastructure.

Datapex replaced 160 desktops with zero‑client virtual desktops hosted on central servers and implemented central backups using Micro Focus VM Explorer, which provides automated test boots to verify backups. The initial rollout in two 2015 branches now backs up about 20–25 VMs (≈6.5 TB) overnight, delivering markedly more stable, reliable operations, lower maintenance costs and greater flexibility, with plans to extend the virtualized environment and storage to the remaining sites.
