Autostrade per l’Italia Reusing 500 COBOL applications in new SOA environment

Autostrade per l’Italia, the operator of Italy’s toll motorway network serving about five million journeys a day across 3,095 km, faced the challenge of modernizing more than 500 batch COBOL applications originally written in legacy Micro Focus APS. The company wanted to move to a service‑oriented delivery model and simplify maintenance without losing mainframe performance or disrupting critical traffic, billing and debt‑collection processes, all under tight time and budget constraints.

Working with partner Sempla, Autostrade used Micro Focus Enterprise Developer (AppMaster Builder) to convert APS code to native Micro Focus COBOL, validate changes in a parallel test environment and perform an incremental roll‑out. The migration went into production in eight months, delivering effective code reuse in a SOA environment, simplified application infrastructure, faster delivery, lower maintenance costs and preserved processing performance.
